soon as you got back

Posted in Uncategorized on 03.09.10 by Merlyn

‘There’s a lot of work waiting for you. I promised Lady Anchorage you would do Anchorage House as soon as you got back. That’s coming down, too, you know - shops underneath and two-roomed flats above. You don’t think, do you, Charles, that all this exotic work you’ve been doing, is going to spoil you for that sort of thing?’ ‘Why should it?’

‘Well, it’s so different. Don’t be cross.’

‘It’s just another jungle closing in.’

‘I know just how you feel, darling. The Georgian Society made such a fuss, but we couldn’t do anything…Did you ever get my letter about Boy?’ ‘Did I? What did it say?’

(‘Boy’ Mulcaster was her brother.)

‘About his engagement. It doesn’t matter now because it’s all off, but father and mother were terribly upset. She was an awful girl. They had to give her money in the end.’

‘No, I heard nothing of Boy.’

under threat of death

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.08.10 by Merlyn

Thus might their story have ended, but for a grimly funny sexual adventure just a few days later in which they are the unwilling participants. In effect, a young woman rapes them both, under threat of death if they don’t service her, in order to revenge herself upon an evil Ifrit who keeps her under septuple lock and key — seven chests within chests, each padlocked — for his exclusive sexual pleasure. She adds the brothers’ seal-rings to those of 570 other men with whom she has cuckolded her terrible captor (the Ifrit, who stole her from her betrothed on her bridal eve, habitually falls asleep after unlocking the seven chests and raping his prisoner; though she dare not flee, she obliges any passing male to mount her, on pain of waking the demon up). The episode demonstrates to the brothers that their wives were no exceptions to the general rule: a rule which they interpret misogynistically, in the spirit of John Donne’s “Go and catch a falling star,”* but which may certainly be interpreted otherwise. Each resolves to go back to his kingdom, resume direction of the government, take a virgin to bed every night, and have her executed in the morning, before she can cuckold him.

Literature is the only

Posted in Uncategorized on 30.08.10 by Merlyn

Compared to the first, the second presumption seems insignificant, though for some of us it would be a necessary condition of civilization that it have a written literature. Literature will no doubt be indispensable as long as language is indispensable, and written literature is important, if not necessary, exactly for its peculiar limitations, which people like Marshall McLuhan made so much of in the 1960s. These limitations (I’m going to call them virtues, but characteristics is a more accurate term than either) can be summed up in four adjectives: written literature is semiotic, anesthetic, linear, and solitary. I shall now speak to these adjectives one at a time, in reverse order.

First, solitary. Literature is the only art I can think of that is normally both produced and consumed, or received, by individuals as individuals. Its audience is one person at a time even when everybody on the beach is reading Jaws or Ragtime (they’re not at all at the same word at the same moment; even if by extraordinary coincidence they were, their experience wouldn’t be communal as the experience of a concert or even a symposium is). Reading is as private as thinking or dreaming, exactly; one imagines that it will be valued (and permitted) as long as private thinking and dreaming are valued and permitted.

As to literature’s linearity — the literal lines of print on the page and the normal one-word-at-a-timeness of language — some of us believe, Dr. McLuhan to the contrary notwithstanding, that to be linear, even continuous, is not necessarily to be wicked. While many important aspects of experience are no doubt “gestaltic,” discontinuous, or otherwise nonlinear, many other aspects are in fact linear and more or less continuous. Other media may deal more effectively than writing with the nonlinear and the discontinuous, but it may be that writing is uniquely suited to deal with the linear and the continuous aspects of human experience.

My forever valentine

Posted in Uncategorized on 21.08.10 by Merlyn

The traditional holidays in our house when I was a child were spent timing elaborate meals around football games. My father tried to make pleasant chitchat and eat as much as he could during halftime. At Christmas he found time to have a cup or two of holiday beer and do this holly-shaped bow tie. But he didn’t truly shine until valentines day.

I don’t know whether it was because work at the office slowed during February or because the football season was over. But valentines day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly thought of him as my “valentine man”.

My first recollection of the magic he could bring to valentines day came when I was six. For several days I had been cutting out valentines for my classmates. Each of us was to decorate a “mailbox” and put it on our desk for others to give us cards. That box and its contents ushered in a succession of bittersweet memories of my entrance into a world of popularity contests marked by the number of cards received, the teasing of boyfriends/girlfriends and the tender care I gave to the card from the cutest boy in class.

That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift- wrapped package at my chair. The card was signed “love, dad”, and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to represent my birthstone, a ruby. There is little difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember wearing that ring with a pride that all the cards in the world could not surpass.

As I grew older, the gifts gave way to heart-shaped boxes filled with my favorite chocolates and always included a special card signed “love, dad” .In those years my “thank-yous” became more of a perfunctory response. The cards seemed less important, and I took for granted that the valentine would always be there. Long past the days of having a “mailbox” on my desk, I had placed my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others”, and “love, dad” just didn’t seem quite enough.

If my father knew then that he had been replaced, he never let it show. If he sensed any disappointment over valentines that didn’t arrive for me, he just tried that much harder to create a positive atmosphere, giving me an extra hug and doing what he could to make my day a little brighter.

My mailbox eventually had a rural address, and the job of hands delivering candy and cards was relegated to the U.S. Postal service. Never in ten years was my father’s package late– nor was it on the valentines day eight years ago when I reached into the mailbox to find a card addressed to me in my mother’s handwriting.

It was the kind of card that comes in an inexpensive assortment box sold by a child going door-to-door to try to earn money for a school project. It was the kind of card that you used to get from a grandmother or an aging aunt or, in this case, a dying father. It was the kind of card that put a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes because you knew the person no longer was able to go out and buy a real valentine. It was a card that signaled this would be the last you would receive from him.

The card had a photograph of tulips on the outside, and on the inside my mother had printed “happy valentines day”. Beneath it, scrawled in barely legible handwriting, was “love, dad”.

His final card remains on my bulletin board today. It’s a reminder of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a tradition of love with a generosity of spirit, simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.

Those things never die, nor does the memory of a man who never stopped being my valentine.

Contact Business Forms vs. Email Addresses

Posted in Uncategorized on 09.08.10 by Merlyn

In order to offer easy communication between individuals and businesses, contact forms are usually provided by businesses for their guests. Contact business forms give visitors and clients a way to communicate with your business and make requests, ask questions, order products or offer suggestions for your products and services. Many companies also use business contact forms to gather information using survey questions, poll visitors on various topics and make subscriptions for their visitors to their newsletters or forums. The use of business forms also has other benefits that come to a company that has an online presence.
One disadvantage of posting email addresses on company websites is that this opens the door for spammers to send junk emails to your address that you obviously do not want to clutter your inbox. These emails are usually pointless advertisements and other material that only results in bandwidth usage. Weeding through these heaps of spam emails to find the ones that need to be read can also be time-consuming. A contact form, on the other hand, has the email address hidden from the human eye and this will dramatically reduce the chances of being hit with spam. While the use of contact business forms as contact alternatives will not give you absolute defense against spam, it can result in substantial reduction in spam. Currently, spammers are able to use email harvesters and bots that retrieve emails behind the scenes or that are able to write on contact forms. This however is much easier to spot than displaying a plain email address on the website since recent technology allows for automatically filled content on contact forms to be viewed as spam and discarded.
Contact business forms also offer another protection as opposed to using an email address. Contact business forms provide protection of personal information both for you and for those that wish to correspond with you through the contact form. It is not necessary for your clients to offer their email address or their names for example. In addition, bots will not be able to retrieve this information that is supplied by both you and your visitors.

Are You Poisoning Yourself With What You Eat?

Posted in Uncategorized on 10.06.10 by Merlyn

I just received the results of my annual physical exam the other day. The doctor said that my cholesterol was too high. It was lower last year by 10 points! How can it be too high this year? Anyway he wanted to put me on drugs to get it lower. kobe bryant shoes

Now I’ve been reading a lot lately about cholesterol, what causes it, and how best to lower it. I decided I would try to find a way to lower it without the drugs. I knew that the drugs could possibly cause liver damage. GREAT, not what I wanted.

Have you noticed all the side effects of almost any drug on the market? Scares me into trying to learn all I can and to find alternatives to the drugs.

My research led me to trans fats. Just what are trans fats and where do they come from. Aren’t trans fats in any form bad for you?

There is a difference between good trans fats and bad trans fats. The bad trans fats have been shown to cause heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, but there is some proof that kobe iv the good trans fat can aid you in getting a leaner body, muscle building, and cancer determent.

Over the last few years it has been stated in the news just how bad synthetic trans fats are for your health. These substances are some of the most offensive food additives and are found in the majority of all processed and fast foods on the market these days.

In their degree of danger to your health, man-made trans fats are as bad as smoking. They are one of the major factors for the outbreak of heart disease since about the 1950’s.

The FDA has required that food manufacturers list the grams of trans fat on all nutrition labels. You now have an easier way to avoid packages with trans fat included in them.

I wanted to clear up some things, specifically about bad trans fats vs. good trans fats, with all of the talk about trans fats in the news. If you’ve never heard of good trans fats before, let me explain.

The Good Trans Fats

The good trans fats are all natural and they are healthy for you. Natural trans fats are produced in the stomachs of animals like cattle, and sheep and make their way into the fat reserves of the animals. Therefore, the milk fat and the fat within the meat of these animals can supply natural healthy trans fats.

Natural trans fats in your diet have been thought to have some possible benefit to assist in both muscle building and fat loss attempts. However, keep in mind that the amount of healthy trans fats in the meat and dairy of animals is greatly lowered by their grain diets and methods of farming. Meat and dairy from grass-fed, free-range animals always have much higher amounts of these favorable fats.

One trans fat is called conjugated linoleic acid and has been retailed by many weight loss companies. Keep in mind that these man-made CLA pills may not be the top way to get natural trans fats in your diet, because they are artificially made from plant oils. Once again, man-made just doesn’t compare to the benefits of natural sources.

The Bad Trans Fats

The bad trans fats are the man-made kind. Any artificially hydrogenated oils exemplify these. Margarine, shortening, and hydrogenated oils that are in most processed foods are the culprits. These hydrogenated oils are considerably processed using harsh chemical solvents like hexane (a component of gasoline), high heat, and pressure.

They have a metal catalyst added, and are then deodorized and bleached. A small amount of the solvent is allowed to stay in the finished oil. Somehow the FDA still lets the food manufacturers put this in our food in vast quantities, even with the well-documented health dangers.

These hydrogenated oils cause irritation internally, which signals cholesterol as a healing agent to be deposited on artery walls. Heart disease has blown out of proportion since this has been added to our food supply.

Soon science will unveil how fatal these oils really are. Eventually they will be banned from use. The labeling laws were simply the first step. Some countries around the world have already banned the use of hydrogenated oils in food manufacturing.

Most companies are replacing them, with highly refined polyunsaturated oils. These are still over processed oils using high heat, solvents, deodorizers, and bleaching agents. Even refined oils are known to yield irritation in your body…a far cry from natural sources of healthy fats.

Your body will bless you as you avoid highly processed foods completely and choose whole, natural, minimally processed foods.

Keep in mind that if an amount of trans fat is listed on a meat or dairy product, it is most likely the natural good trans fats that we’ve talked about here. Otherwise, if the quantity of trans fat is listed on any processed foods, it is most likely the hazardous unwholesome fat from artificially hydrogenated oils.

Please stay away from these fats! Now that all of your labels should be listing grams of trans fat it will be easy to spot the bad trans fats.

Stay away from any food that lists hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils as an ingredient. Your body will thank you for it.

I hope you will use this information to arm yourself with more wholesome food choices for a healthier body. This was an intriguing look at good trans fat vs. bad trans fat that I hope you keep in mind while making food choices.
